FENDACE

If you keep up with high fashion houses at all, you’ll have heard of the ground-breaking Fendi x Versace show that happened last week. The two Italian brands held a collaborative show to close out Milan Fashion Week, with Donatella Versace and Fendi’s creative leads switching roles to create the polarizing mix of Versace’s golden Greek Key patterns, and Fendi’s favored logomania motifs. Design elements were taken from both sides, but I can’t help but think that the show looked to be seventy-five percent Versace and twenty-five percent Fendi.

Almost every look was composed of sleek metallic fabrics, with many of the textiles holding Versace’s favored motif. The recent trend of reviving Y2K fashion was also present, if I am at all to trust the low-rise bottoms and the, frankly iconic, whale tail I spotted on Gigi Hadid. Chunky gold jewelry was present on every single model and guest, and if you’re only going to look up one look from the night, I need you to look up the slinky gold ensemble modeled by Emily Ratajkowski.

A few more details you might have missed: Fendace truly pulled out all the stops with the models, with an emphasis on 90’s supermodels. Kristen McMenamy opened, and Naomi Campbell closed, while Kate Moss and Amber Valetta appeared as a duo in a yin-yang black and white set of mini dresses.

In my personal opinion, Versace stomped on Fendi in this collection. The gold motif is simply too recognizable to not be associated with Versace, and some of the accessories simply looked like the twin Fendi logo were simply stapled on. Certainly, the 90’s era that influenced both labels made its mark, and was seen heavily in all the looks, however, with modern trends being cycled through so quickly in the internet washing machine, it’s unclear if the collection will stand the test of time. Overall, the Fendace show was certainly one for the books, if only for the history of it all. Was it a slam dunk, shut-down-the-show, absolute success? No, but it was mostly quality fashion with clear influences that did justice to both designer brands equally.
