Capturing Chinese Street Fashion on TikTok & Douyin

You may have seen the Chinese streetwear fashion all over TikTok with people wearing fashionable clothing walking the streets of China. They wear stylish, colorful, flashy, and versatile streetwear clothing in some of China’s biggest cities. The clothes are a mix of modern styles and traditional Chinese styles.

The Chinese street fashion trend was started on an app called Douyin, which is the Chinese version of TikTok. It became such a big trend that people started reposting these videos over on Tiktok. The fashionistas walk down the streets while their confidence radiates through the screen as if they were models walking down a runway. Many fans of these videos started wondering how the videos are made. They wondered if they were deliberately modeling for the camera or if they were candid shots of random people off the streets. The videos seemed professional and of high quality, so the question of whether the videos were authentic wasn’t a big surprise.

In an article written by Vogue, Anna Mei who runs @eromei on Tiktok creates some of these street fashion videos and says some are candid and some are staged. She explains that videographers shoot different people walking on the streets that catch their eye wearing fashionable clothing. However, some are also staged using models and influencers to show off their savvy clothing style. The videos are usually captured in China’s fashion districts such as Sanlitun and Taikoo Li in Beijing and Xintiandi in Shanghai.

Videographers then compile the multiple videos into one video that goes onto their social media platforms. If you’re interested in taking more of a look at the captivating Chinese street fashion videos, some Tiktok accounts are @sh1ryinyin, @curioussyd, and @marstruck. You undoubtedly won’t be disappointed by the Chinese streetwear and it will give you some unique style inspiration. I’ve definitely watched a lot of Chinese street fashion on TikTok and it has given me a different aspect of fashion creativity and individuality. It kind of puts my style to shame and definitely motivates me to dress up more when I’m going out. Because who knows, maybe one day my stylish outfit is what the videographer on the street needs.
