Coperni and Hadid's Iconic Moment

From Sep. 26 to Oct. 4, 2022, models, designers, influencers, journalists, and everyone in between, flocked to Paris, France for Paris Fashion week.

Paris fashion week has had many iconic moments, such as the super-market Chanel runway show in 2014, or Janaye Furman’s 2017 Louis Vuitton debut, as the first Black model to open for the brand.

On September 3, 2022, The Coperni show took place in Salle des Textiles at Paris's Musée des Arts et Métiers. Coperni is a French womenswear brand based in Paris created by Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant who first met while studying at Mod'Art in 2009. Vaillant defines the brand aesthetic as “simple, minimalist, and chic” according to a 2014 Vogue Paris interview. Nicolaus Copernicus inspired the brand name, a Polish astronomer famous for developing and defending the theory of Heliocentrism.

In 2014 Coperni was recognized for its experimental designs and won the ANDAM’s Creative Label Prize, an award given to labels for their creative use and potential, and was a finalist for the LVMH Prize in 2015.

Although Coperni is still a relatively new brand, for their Spring 2023 ready-to-wear collection, Coperni went big, creating viral and iconic moments in the process. Including dresses made with thousands of pieces of embroidered glass and a solid gold version of the designers’ Swipe bag which was melted down after the show and required it’s own security team. However, the most iconic moment of the show, and arguably this fashion week season thus far, was the closing look.

Supermodel Bella Haded emerged onto the runway wearing a white, barely-there, g-string and kitten heels, then, she stepped onto a platform in the middle of the runway. There, three artists and Coperni creators spray-painted a dress on Hadid, taking less than seven minutes for the process in total.

Finally, one of the creators pulled the straps off of Hadids shoulders, and cut a slit into the dress, Hadid then circled the runway wearing the dress that moments ago, was being painted on.

The process used not made of traditional spray paint, but rather a fibrous thin material made from latex that builds up into similar material as actual fabric. In 2003, Torres created Fabrican — a liquid fiber, bound together with various polymers. According to Torres, the fabric feels like suede and can be manipulated, like pulling the sleeves off of Hadids shoulder or cutting a slit into the dress.

Moments like Coperni’s, remind us all that fashion is still an artistic medium that can be fun and unique, not solely about collaborations, influencer feature models, or branding.

Ultimately, Coperni and Hadid created one of the most iconic moments in fashion history. Coperni showed that fashion can still be revolutionary and unique. Coperni used unconventional materials such as Fabrican, to create not just a beautiful silhouette hugging dress, but an artistic and creative moment.
