When shopping for clothing in retail stores do you have trouble finding the perfect size? When browsing online for clothing do you ask yourself, “Is this going to fit?” It seems that every retail and online store has their own measurements and quality control. This makes it hard to gage your true size to have that perfect fit. Fortunately, there’s a new technology called digital tailors. Digital tailors are websites that scan your body, cut and sew the garment, and ship the perfectly fitted piece of clothing to your home.
How does the digital tailor find accurate measurements?
Digital tailors use 3D body scans from the customer’s phone, or the customer can enter their own measurements. The scan is sent to the digital tailor where machine learning, statistical modelling, and algorithms determine the pattern for the client’s body. After the pattern has been digitally produced, the garment will be cut and sewn together either by hand or by machine. Once the garment is finished, it is shipped to the client within a timely manner allowing the client to check the fit and quality. Most digital tailors offer a grace period for free returns or re measures.
Will digital tailors take over retail?
It’s hard to say because digital tailors are very new, and the technology is still improving. One disadvantage of a digital tailor is the absence of the physical garment. People enjoy shopping in physical retail stores because they can feel, see, and try-on garments. In contrast, the digital tailor offers a perfect-fitted piece of clothing while retail stores use ‘average’ sizes where the customer must try on to be sure the actual size. Maybe in the future, online shopping and digital tailors will take over retail. In that case, retail stores will have to adapt and incorporate the same technologies. For instance, one day you might walk into a JCPenney’s and there will be a room that measures your body then lists all the clothing closest to your size.
