The new age of technology is upon us, and high fashion is not getting left behind. There has been a recent trend of futuristic graphic rendering in fashion design and photography. Designers, brands, and celebrities have used this otherworldly aesthetic in campaigns and shoots, showcasing some of the most creative designs we have seen in the past decade. Canadian singer Grimes showcased her unique style at the 2021Met Gala, wearing a custom Iris Van Herpen dress.
Iris Van Herpen has made a name for herself as one of “fashion’s most forward-thinking designers.” She has challenged the expectations of fashion design by “contemplating movement as a metamorphic force that enables these ethereal garments to extend from the human body, sculpting their forms into multi-dimensional silhouettes.”
The Amsterdam based designer revealed her most recent show, “Earthrise,” from last year's fashion week. The fabrics used were made from recycled plastics from the ocean. The show was centered around
themes of freedom, adventure, exploration and fearlessness.
Bringing it back to the Met Gala, Euphoria star, Hunter Shafer, wore fine jewelry designed by the ceramicist Evangeline AdaLioryn, as well as reality altering contact lenses that added the otherworldly effect.
Famous photographer Brian Huynh has made a lasting impression in the fashion industry through his use of futuristic design elements in his photos. The work of CG rendering and other special effects allow him
to create sceneries like no other. He has photographed countless celebrities in the music industry, such as Grimes, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, and Kpop girl group AESPA. Aside from celebrities he has worked with Time Magazine, Vogue Singapore, Nike, HBO, Fashion Designer Peter Do, and more.
The Montreal and NYC based Media maker is now co-creative director alongside Grimes for her upcoming work. His instagram is @bryanhuynh.
With such a large trend in fashion, this has led to many young, budding designers to showcase their talent. Visual artists such as @abisheng (left) and @jeanpetra (right) join the futuristic fashion craze in their own adaptation.
Designers such as Davina India, @devinaindia on instagram, use 3D rendering to create lifelike fashion designs. This pair of boots only exists digitally, but have proven they are worth the production through their popularity on social media. The visual artist posts 3D rendered fashion designs and other images, as if they were worn on a person, showcasing their unique creative ability. Visual Media Artist @xixitongxx (left) also uses digital 3D rendering to create otherworldly, metallic fashion designs fit for a space galactic queen.
Designer brand Coperni just had their show at Paris Fashion week, dropping their new line of Swipe Bags, this time, with a futuristic flare. The bag worn by Gigi Hadid is a clear, glass handbag, large enough to fit a phone and wallet.
