Even though it felt like Halloween was just last week, and I know many of my neighbors have pumpkins still on their porch, the Holiday season is quickly approaching! As someone who constantly feels they have nothing to wear, some key essentials that you already may have, can elevate your style for the holiday season.
1. Velvet
A classic essential for the holidays– velvet! Using velvet to elevate your outfit is a perfect way to dress up something simple while adding a wintery twist. Dressing up a velvet top, blazer or dress is perfect, but if you don’t have any pieces in a velvet texture, you can always opt for some velvet ribbon in your hair to tie your outfit together. Additionally, utilizing velvet pieces in darker tones such as a deep burgundy, red, or emerald green can be a perfect way to make your look more holiday appropriate.
2. Sequins
Although sequins are usually reserved for New Years Eve parties, this season sequins are all the rage. Opt for a sequined top or skirt, with a more simplistic look such as a sweater, dress pants or jeans to elevate something simple into a festive look. Mixing sequin color-ways is also a trendy way to approach the sequin look too. Opting for a gold sequin top with silver barrettes, boots or a belt can add dimension to your look. Nothing screams a party than arriving looking like a trendy disco ball! Although sequins are trendy this season, glittering and gleaming has nearly gone out of style, so check resellers like Poshmark, Nuuly, ThredUp, and your local thrift store to check this look off your list instead of buying new!
3. Leather
Even though leather is essential for the cold weather, if you prefer more of an edgy or low key look leather is perfect for you. Utilizing leather in your outfits can elevate your look and can make you look more put together. Leather pants have been incredibly popular this season, but you can opt for a leather jacket or skirt with a statement sweater or tights to pull together the whole look. If you happen to have a pair of leather pants, a festive sweater or blanket scarf can make your look more cozy than edgy–perfect for the holidays!
4. Fun Hats
Although beanies and pom-pom hats have always been “in” for the cold weather season, you can trade out your knit beanie for a conductor or newsie hat. If you find that your style is more quirky and vintage, this is a perfect way to make your look more festive and holiday appropriate. Even wearing a simple sweater, jeans, and boots can be dressed up by wearing a unique hat, especially if you're traveling around the city for holiday plans.
5. Shacket
Easily one of the most popular trends of this cold weather season has been the shacket. From Free Peoples “Ruby Jacket” to the dupes seen on Pacsun and Forever 21, the shacket has truly taken over. In fact, as I write this I am cozied up in my Ruby Jacket in the “Sumac” colorway from Free People. If you can’t get your hands on a Ruby then hitting your local thrift store is the best bet for an oversized flannel or shaket. Throwing on a shacket while going out keeps you warm and trendy at the same time. Often, I’ll wear a Ruby or corduroy shacket with a maxi dress or a skirt. It keeps me warm but is also functional and trendy.
6. Tights/ Stockings
Lastly, one of my favorites for the holiday season is tights! You can find tights anywhere from designers to Target. Recently, more designers such as Fendi, Gucci, and Skims have released motif and branded tights for the fall and winter season. Tights are a really great way to dress up any outfit, especially if they are printed or a fun color. Utilizing tights are perfect if you want to save money, or cozy up a dress or skirt that may be fitted for warmer weather.
Overall for this holiday season it is of course important to have fun and dress up, but it is also important to remain eco conscious. You don’t need to go out and buy a brand new outfit, you can utilize what you already have in your closet, or resort to using second hand sites. Afterall, you don’t need to spend too much money to look put together, trendy and fashionable. Happy holidays!
