In just a few days, thousands of music-lovers will crowd the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, to hear artists like Lady Gaga, Charli XCX, Zedd, and Post Malone at the iconic music festival Coachella.
Coachella has been running annually since 2001 and has evolved from a standard music festival, to a global phenomenon where viewers across the globe attend vicariously through social media accounts that showcase the festival that capture the fashion, art, and vibes.
When people think of Coachella, their minds go straight to the aura of its event in 2016. The one where Vanessa Hudgens rocked a flower crown and King Kylie was at her peak. 2016’s Coachella, which was filled with lacey boho numbers, floppy hats, and jean shorts, was deemed legendary due to its insane lineup with Calvin Harris, Flume, and Major Lazer, as well as its whimsical essence, which was romanticized through YouTubers like Bethany Mota and LaurDIY.
Though this year's event may not be able to beat 2016’s, I believe it will come close. Based on trends throughout the past year, with EDM trending again, especially with Charli XCX’s new drops, nostalgia around 2014-16 resurfacing on TikTok, and boho fashion being on everyone's mood boards; the peak of Coachella may be revived.
People will attempt to channel this 2016 energy this year, but put a modern twist on it. They may swap the floppy hats for pashminas, gladiator sandals for cowboy boots, and the distressed jorts for fun micro shorts. Overall, the bohemian aesthetic remains an overarching theme, so lace, denim, studs, and earthy tones will remain prevalent in modern ways.
