Wondering what to wear when it’s 50 degrees when you wake up but 72 when you walk out of classes for the day? Well, the answer is simple: layer! Layering is an essential skill as we transition into fall temperatures. With global warming making these November days a bit steamier than we’re used to, it’s all the more important to stay comfy in autumnal attire while we do our part to help the planet. No one wants to pick out the perfect outfit for one temperature, only to be sweltering a few hours later, so I suggest taking off a layer to reveal a brand new clothing combo that keeps you looking and feeling fresh. Even something as simple as a white tee under a sweater can add another dimension to your outfit, giving you the option to shed a layer if it gets too warm.
One of my favorite looks is a simple white shirt under a cardigan. You can button up and have a bit of the white collar peeking through the neckline or out of the bottom of the sweater, or leave it unbuttoned, exposing the tee. If you get too warm, you can take the sweater off entirely and tie it around your waist or shoulders. Wearing this with a good pair of jeans, a cute belt, and a pair of sneakers or loafers is a staple outfit in my wardrobe. This option allows you to feel comfortable with whatever climate or mood you encounter while staying stylish.
Another combination I love seeing is a vest with a tee underneath. You can switch this up depending on the weather, picking a long sleeve shirt with a heavier duty vest, or short sleeve with a thinner vest. This is also a great option to dress up or down depending on the occasion: throw on a skirt and some tights to make it a bit more formal, or just some comfy pants and sneakers to keep it casual.
One more option I always reach for is a short sleeve button up or tee-shirt with a long sleeve underneath. This is another classic that allows you to adapt to the changing weather. I used to wear this combination at least twice a week in high school. With every classroom having a different temperature, it allowed me to add or subtract a layer anytime I needed. It was also a great option if I wanted to wear something on the baggier side.
All of these options are versatile and timeless. Adding fun accessories or a cute pair of boots can really make an outfit, so consider these combinations as you build your fall fits. As the seasons change, so do our closets, but these are outfits that you likely already have in your dresser and can help you transition into the cooler weather. A lot of these pieces can be found in thrift stores or secondhand, so don’t hesitate to search for a unique sweater or shirt to spice up your fall wardrobe.
