Gen Z fashion trends popularized through social media have stayed consistent and predictable throughout the years, maintaining a more minimalistic, aesthetically pleasing look.
However, the latest shoe trend, the MSCHF “Astro Boy'' boot has turned heads in the fashion community. The giant rubber boots cartoon effect derives from an inspiration, Japanese manga character Astro Boy. The boots went on sale and sold out February 16 for $350, but prior to this date the shoes have been seen on influencers and celebrities who got their hands on them, like Wisdm, Diplo, and Coi Leray.
The MSCHF press release described their new boot as “Cartoon boots for a Cool 3D World.” They emphasized how the abstract nature of cartoonishness can free us from the constraints of reality.
MSCHF, a New York-based art collective, is known for being experimental in the fashion industry, being the same creator for Lil Nas X’s satan sneakers and the pricey “Birkinstocks,” a $76K shoe made from real Birkin bags. Their group is focused on nonconformity, regardless of the backlash they may get for their bold designs.
A CNN article says modern fashion is entering its silly era, where Harry Styles wore a “clowncore” jumpsuit to the Grammys and frog-faced mules were created by British label JW Anderson collaboration with Wellipets, a rain boot brand.
So far the Astro boots have gotten mixed reviews, with tons of memes spewing out on Twitter. Some say they can’t wait to buy the boots, others believe people won’t style them correctly, or they’re just plain ugly.
Although the boots are funny looking and not practical shoes, it’s interesting to see a fashion trend go a different direction than usual. What’s your take on the big, red boots?
