One thing that's true about fashion is that trends always come back in style. A lot of
trends from the 2000s have been creeping back into people’s closets and everyone is here for it.
Early 2000s fashion was characterized by oversized pants, thick and sparkly belts, statement
necklaces and hats, mid length pants and skirts as well as mini low-rise skirts and capris.
Platform flip flops and heels worn casually were trademarks of this time. Big chunky bags were
accessorized charmingly to spice up an outfit. The overall vibe of this time was carefree and
comfortable, while simultaneously being stylish and fun. With the summer and sunshine days
approaching, let’s take a look at some of the iconic 2000s fashion staples that can be
incorporated into our summer wardrobes.
One of the Poster girls for 2000s fashion is Sarah Jessica Parker, playing Carrie
Bradshaw in Sex in the City. One of her go-to looks was a long pastel colored flowy dress. Paired
with a cute girly heel and an oversized bag, this frilled midi dress makes the perfect light and
airy outfit for summer. Going with a maxi skirt of similar material and style paired with a
full-length tank top is on-par with the 2000s vibe as well. Enjoyable accessories are a must, such
as large pendant necklaces or more dainty simple beaded necklaces. Pieces like this have been
appearing on the runway this season and will be big for summer 2024, specifically in this
pastel/bubblegum pink.

Nothing screams 2000s like low-rise flare jeans with a tight fit waist-length graphic tee.
This classic combo is timeless and effortlessly cool. Pairing this outfit with adidas campus 00s,
adidas sambas or high rise converse will give it a sporty look. On the other hand, this versatile
look can also be paired with heels and a paperboy hat to dress it up. As seen below on the right,
Christina Agulara sports a white cropped shirt with low rise jeans, black cut-off leather gloves, a
coordinating black purse and a striped paperboy hat. The hair accessories such as feathers and
beads and jewelry such as bangle bracelets and hoop earrings are iconic for this time and could
certainly make a comeback this year. The low rise jeans can be substituted with low rise cargos,
and spiced up with embroidery around the pockets and seams as seen on the outfit in the left
image. Natural and voluminous hair is also a key element to heighten the effect of these looks.
Another fashion icon from the 2000s is Anahí who plays Mia Colucci in the telenovela
Rebelde. Her signature outfits include embellished and embroidered tops, skirts, and dresses that
have flower motifs and other dimensional details. Delivering a dainty and unique spin on 2000s
fashion, some elements of her iconic looks have been seen making a comeback, such as
embroidered details. She also rocks pleated short skirts, high-knee boots and cropped sweater
boleros. Fun accessories, such as peace sign necklaces, resemble the free-spirited and eccentric
era, as well as fun prints incorporating butterflies and florals such as the one seen on Anahí’s
skirt on the left. Her classic hairstyle was a pin straight cut with bangs, again with a nice volume
most likely inspired by the 90s hairstyles. Once more, we see pastel pinks and earthy greens,
which are colors that are popular for spring and summer 2024.
The 2000s gave us a widespread collection of aesthetics that combine to create versatility
for many different types of people. The 2000s styles embraced uptown and preppy academia
aesthetics as well as alternative and streetwear aesthetics. The 2000s also resembled trends
similar to current aesthetics such as the mermaid core aesthetic which utilizes frilled and flowy
dresses/skirts and iridescent elements. These trends elevated comfort into chic looks, almost
bordering on “camp” at some times, but that was the fun of it.
