Sabyasachi x Bergdorf Goodman: Bringing Iconic Indian Fashions to the American Market

Sabyasachi Mukherjee has been an icon in India since 1999 when he pioneered the use of beautiful Indian textiles and craftsmanship to construct modern, luxury pieces. Mukherjee has his own label, named after himself, Sabyasachi. He is known for incorporating traditional methods like block printing, bandhani, mirror work, and embroidery/gota work to create modern silhouettes. Even though the designer only has three flagship stores in India, he has taken the nation’s bridalwear industry by storm with his classy, contemporary lehengas and sarees, which have entranced the new generation of Indian brides.

The Kolkata-based designer has gained international acclaim, particularly through the notable moment where his work was featured in the 2024 Met Gala on actress Alia Bhatt.

Before this, in 2022, Sabyasachi had opened an elaborate storefront in Manhattan’s West Village, its first US location. This was incredibly exciting for American Desis who longed to experience the luxurious and rich nature of the designer’s work in person (without traveling to India). This week, the designer unveiled his newest US store which is a concept shop in Bergdorf Goodman.

It is located on the fourth floor of the luxury retailer’s women's store and contains ultra-luxe jewels, leather and embroidered handbags, and some ready-to-wear evening pieces. The ambiance of the shop is reminiscent of his other storefronts, in which he pays homage to the beauty of Indian interior design. The shop is lined with Indian rugs, antiques, and traditional patterned wallpaper.

Sabyasachi aims to cater to “‘...the luxury client who wants to venture beyond the ubiquitous and find unique and exclusive items that are not seen anywhere else’” through his partnership with Bergdorf Goodman. For his label’s future in the US, Sabyasachi hopes to continue expanding in the luxury jewelry space and venture into the fragrance, beauty, and eyewear spaces.
