Featured in Louis Vuitton’s latest fashion show during Paris Fashion Week: an activist, storming the stage.
There have been many controversies surrounding the recent overtake of the show featuring Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2022 collection. A climate change activist took part in the show by walking the runway holding a giant tapestry that read “OVERCONSUMPTION = EXTINCTION”. Thinking it was part of an avant-garde performance, approved by Louis Vuitton, the security guards hesitated in escorting her off the runway. She was later tackled and removed.
There have been many aspects of the event that have been analyzed and either critiqued or applauded. From the poise of the models to the terror of the audience, the moment of activism got people talking.
Some applauded her work, praising her for her bold action at such a luxurious event. Others, cringing at the spectacle.
I applaud her for her bravery and standing up for something that truly is an issue. Without events like these, these topics aren’t brought to light. When I try and think of the last time I heard about the issue of overconsumption, I find myself unable to recall. Since hearing about the fashion show, I took the time to look into overconsumption and the problem it poses for our planet, and I was taken back.
Moments like these help people to really focus on issues, and leads to us trying to fix the problem, and for that, I think what she did was incredible.
