The Met Gala is an event I’m sure every reader is familiar with; anyone who has a
name in the fashion world goes to the Met Gala, and everyone else is glued to their
phones watching reporters live-Tweet every celebrity’s outfits. It’s an event marked by
opulence, splendor and cutting–edge moves made in fashions regular people can only
dream of.
The Met Gala traditionally always happens the first Monday in May, delayed to
September in 2021 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Despite only eight months having
passed since the last Gala, convention demands the event return to old habits. In keeping
with this, the theme has been announced to be “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”, a
theme dedicated readers will know harkens back to the 2021 theme of “In America: A
Lexicon of Fashion”. Thematically, the attendants will once again be required to stick to
heroes of American fashion, with this second iteration of the event meant to celebrate
newcomers of the American fashion scene, whereas its predecessor honored established
US designers like Christopher John Rogers, Tom Ford, Vera Wang and Ralph Lauren.
But who will bring the event to the masses? The hosts of the event are typically
always charismatic celebrities we all know and love, and quips from them are viral
Twitter memes for days after the event. On March 17, Vogue Magazine announced that
the 2022 hosts will be Lin-Manuel Miranda, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Regina
King. All of the above will be the 2022 Met Gala’s official co-chairs, with designer Tom
Ford, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour continuing as permanent
chairs of the event.
As for who is invited and what will happen after the red carpet, the short answer is
that no one but the attendees and organizers know. The Gala has a famous no-phone rule,
intended to preserve the secrecy of the event. The closest guess so far seems to be that
there is a high-profile music concert, attendees converge on the star exhibit at the Met,
and then all sit down for a catered dinner. It seems that we will all find out who is invited
to the event on the red carpet, but traditionally there are 600 coveted tickets available to
the Gala. Tickets are not available for sale, even celebrities have to be invited and dressed
by some designer or brand, which typically invite their muses or brand representatives,
i.e. Marc Jacobs, Kate Moss, Grimes and Iris Van Herpen.
Expect to see both up-and-coming and established American designers, houses and
brands, worn by the most chic and fashionable celebrities. (There are always a few male
VIPs who show up in a plain black suit, but they’re always torn apart after on Twitter.)
The annual celebration of fashion promises to be especially exciting this year, with
COVID numbers going down every day and the fashion world slowly recovering from a
recession caused by the aforementioned pandemic, everyone is sure to show up and show
out.
