From Lectures to A Night Out: A Guide to Day to Night Outfits

Brayden Mason

As college students, a feeling we’re all too familiar with is not having enough time in the day. Between classes, work, studying, and extracurriculars, finding time to go home and get ready for a night out can be impossible on some days. So, for the fashion-forward of us who want to look good through the day into the night, how can we do so without having the time? Welcome the strategic art of transitional outfits! By planning your outfit in a way that a few key pieces can be changed to make it appropriate for both class and date night, you can ensure you look your best no matter where the day takes you.

When planning a transitional outfit, prioritize plain clothing, free of any large logos or prints. I’m a believer that the core of a good transitional outfit is in the bottoms. If you’re wearing a t-shirt with a large print or logo, it’s easy to throw on a coat or sweater and cover it up, but what you have on for bottoms you’re more than likely keeping on throughout the day. With this in mind, you cannot go wrong with a pair of neutral colored straight-leg pants, the Swiss army knife of transitional fashion. This can be anything from a pair of relaxed blue jeans or even pleated trousers, if your campus fashion is dressier.

The core of a versatile outfit is in the pants, but the devil is in the details. Good use of accessories are what will really make your daytime and nighttime outfits distinct from each other. Keeping a collection of statement jewelry is the easiest way to shift your outfits’ vibe. A cool necklace or a few of your favorite rings can make all the difference. Your choice of footwear is just as important. A good pair of loafers, Mary Janes, or low-top Doc Martens can go a long way in transitioning your outfit from the classroom to a night out. Finally, a mini shoulder bag is not only practical, but can elevate a breezy classroom outfit into something fit for a night in the city.

Layering is another great way to change the feel of an outfit, without doing a whole lot. This is why it’s important to wear plain clothing when planning a transitional outfit. Having the ability to turn a white top and blue jeans into a date night fit with just a leather jacket is what makes transitional fashion so versatile, and why I personally make most of my outfits with this in mind. Any kind of outerwear will get the job done, sweaters, cardigans, flannels, the world is really your oyster, especially this time of year.
