Spring has Sprung: What to Wear

As the warm, summer weather begins as early as April, it’s time to talk about what to wear in the Spring and Summer of 2023.

Walking around Temple’s campus I’ve already seen so many different types of spring and summer styles, colors, and patterns that students have put together.

Spring and Summer fashion is supposed to be fun, expressive, and sexy, but also comfortable. Many of the summer trends that have hit the retail market are fitting to these expectations.

Who doesn’t love cargo pants? Multi-pocketed clothing has been popular for a long time, serving as a timeless piece for practically any outfit. This year, Vogue says the cargo skirt and jacket will be a fresh look for Spring. Luxury brands like Miu Miu and Louis Vuitton have hopped on the utilitarian trend with their cargo skirts.

Arguably the most important essential of spring and summertime fashion is denim, but this time making denim more playful. There are many ways to spice up your denim, like a denim-on-denim look, denim maxi skirts, corset tops, patchwork, and more. Baggy jeans are only getting baggier according to Elle Magazine, where Kate Moss debuted the spring collection for Bottega Veneta in baggy jeans and a flannel shirt.

When Kate Moss is being styled in a flannel shirt for spring, you know it’s intentional. Vogue says that grunge will be revisited, as Erdem, “London’s purveyor of pristine,” is distressing hems. Such styles include mixing darker solid colors and patterns, chunky boots, and a good pair for distressed denim. “If you want to keep your Dr Martens, be our guest; the latest take on renegade fashion could do with some toughening up,” Vogue wrote.

Now for spring colors, pastels are a classic color palette, with shades like Robin’s egg blue, lavender, baby pink, and blood orange. These are simply fun colors that make great statements and layering pieces.

While dressing colorful is always in style, new styles have shifted to what’s called “cool girl spring,” a shiny silver. It’s less out there than gold, but more bold than black said Vogue. It’s seen as low-key luxury, popularized by Michael Kors’ silver sequined maxi skirt.

Not only should we be talking about what to wear, but what everyone is already wearing at Temple. As the weather has been strikingly hot this past second week of April, I’ve been observing what students are wearing walking around campus.

Without fail, the maxi skirt will always be a great spring and summer piece. I’ve seen students style their maxi skirts in so many ways, with different colorways, some with sneakers, some with loafers. I get excited when I see someone else in a maxi skirt, (I'm wearing one too.) I’ve also seen many flowy sundresses, some with asymmetrical hems and floral patterns. There’s a collective feeling when wearing a maxi skirt or dress on a warm day, you just feel good.

It’s refreshing to see students' individual style and their play on timeless trends for spring and summer. This highlighted how important it is to stay individualized throughout the trends that pass through each season. If something is trending or in season, it doesn’t mean you have to wear it to be stylish, and you can make it your own too. I look forward to seeing how students and icons will style the trends for spring and summer of 2023.
