The seasons are finally changing. The weather is shifting from the cold, gloomy days of the winter to the warm, breezy days of the spring. With that, I have been trading in my winter clothes for my spring ones, opting for skirts instead of jeans, and T-shirts instead of sweaters. However, every year, I face the dilemma of how to accessorize my warm-weather outfits. In the winter, I find it easy to layer my outfits with jackets and scarves, but in the spring and summer, I find myself wondering how to enhance an outfit. Accessorizing seems to be the solution to my dilemma, and one of my favorite ways to do that is by upping my shoe game.
I realized that a good pair of shoes amplifies an outfit in the spring and summer. A shoe’s true potential is never revealed in the winter. Half of it is hidden by my pants, and I feel it is never the statement of my outfit. On the other hand, skirts and shorts allow shoes to make a statement. So, as a celebration of the weather becoming nicer, here is a list of some of my favorite shoes I have seen strutting around the streets of Philadelphia.
Cowboy Boots
Cowboy Boots seem to emerge back in the fashion scene this time of year, every year. The playful boot trended in summer 2022, however, the boots are a timeless essential to everyone’s wardrobe. We can thank Ralph Lauren for making cowboy boots a fashion staple in 1979. Ever since then, the boots have been paired with anything from jeans to skirts to shorts.
Nike Dunks
Throughout the past few years, Nike Dunks revival in fashion has been evident. The shoe was originally created in 1985 as a basketball shoe with Micheal Jordan as their golden customer. The shoe was later picked up by the skate scene in the 1990s but was rarely mentioned until recently. The shoe slowly began to creep its way back into the fashion scene with artists like Frank Ocean and Travis Scott seen sporting the shoe in paparazzi photos. The shoe began to trickle its way into street style. The shoe’s unique color combinations create the opportunity for it to be the statement of any outfit.
Doc Martens Mary Janes and Bethane Leather Platform Shoes
Doc Martens are worn all year round. The company literally has anything your heart desires when it comes to a boot or shoe. In the spring, however, I would opt for their Mary Janes or Bethane Platform shoe. Spring and summer are all about the joys of being outside after the long winter months, and these shoes embody the playfulness that comes about with the change in seasons. Mary Janes and the Bethane Platforms go with anything, jorts, maxi skirts, summer dresses, you name it, throw on these shoes, and you have an outfit.
Jelly Sandals
Okay, so finally I would like to discuss a shoe that all the fashion magazines are saying is the summer trend shoe of 2023. It is, in fact, the jelly sandal. I used to own a pair when I was younger, and to be honest, I am all for it coming back. They come in different colors and designs and are an ode to our childhoods. Designers put their own twist on the shoe to make it more chic and sophisticated while still maintaining its youthful qualities. The shoe has been morphed into a chunky heel or a classic flat, and are paired with maxi dresses and skirts.
