October is finally here, which means spooky season is upon us, and Halloween is right around the corner! I’m sure we have all been thinking, planning, or maybe even shopping for our Fall 2024 wardrobe. Which is why pulling inspiration from fall, horror, and Halloween-themed films could never steer you wrong during this time.
So, let’s analyze the fashion from a few films to elevate our fall wardrobe! For fall-themed films, we will be looking at Dead Poets Society (1989) and When Harry Met Sally (1989). For horror and Halloween-themed films, we will explore the fashion in Candyman (1992) and The Craft (1996). At the end, there will be honorable mentions. These films offer a wide range of fashion inspiration from various aesthetics and decades.
Dead Poets Society was set in 1959, which heavily influenced the style in the film. The fashion from the film falls under the academia, dark academia, or preppy clothing aesthetic. Academia fashion offers a timeless scholarly look that exemplifies sophistication, mystery, and intellectualism. The aesthetic incorporates elements of tweed, wool, neutral tones, and layering. You can recreate the characters’ styles with blazers, letterman jackets, sweaters, vests, loafers, and ties. To accessorize, consider a watch, glasses, and a leather bag. Wearing this style, you will feel ready to study and crack open a book!
Additional Examples:
The gem, When Harry Met Sally, is a romantic comedy set during autumn in New York, offering a plethora of fall fashion inspiration. The style in the film can best be described as the epitome of fall coziness. Highlights include Sally's dark cherry red sweater and Harry’s cream-colored sweater; red and cream hues are a perfect color palette for the fall. Sally’s black sweater dress, tights, and black kitten heels outfit emulates a refined and polished look. In contrast, Harry’s relaxed t-shirt, plaid button-up, belt, blue jeans, and sneakers ensemble, embodies a casual laid-back vibe—ideal for everyday on-the-go fall wear. You simply cannot go wrong with these classic looks that are tried and true. They provide an excellent foundation for creating a capsule wardrobe, too!
Candyman is a horror and fantasy film. You might be wondering, “There is fashion in Candyman?” The answer is yes! Specifically, the Candyman’s iconic trench coat. With the weather getting chillier in the fall, a good coat is necessary to block out the cold. Trench coats have been back in style for a while now, and despite the Candyman being a truly terrifying character, fur trench coats are undeniably stylish and warm. When you are looking to buy your next coat, consider investing in a trench coat to elevate your fall wardrobe.
The Craft is a horror mystery film portraying four witches. The Craft has become highly influential for those interested in the occult, goth, and alternative clothing aesthetics and fashion subcultures. The film also showcases some blends of ‘90s grunge and whimsy goth styles as well. Leather, chokers, and crosses are all commonplace motifs in the film, and dark eyeliner and lipstick are often used to complete the look. These styles typically lean toward darker color palettes incorporating black, burgundy, and other darker color hues, which make them well-suited for fall. The style seen in the film is still very relevant to the times and can be duplicated to channel a witchy vibe, just like the characters in the film.
Honorable Mentions: Return to Halloweentown (2006), Twitches (2005-2007), and The Twilight Saga (2008-2012)
As you can see, films can offer a wealth of fashion inspiration. The best part? These styles are accessible to everyone! Hopefully, you can integrate these spooktacular styles into your fall lookbook. Happy Fall, and thank you for reading!
