Now that Halloween season is upon us, you’ve probably started rewatching your favorite
horror films. From cult classics such as Scream (1996) to recent films such as Pearl (2022),
fashion has enhanced the horror film industry, fabricating iconic looks that so many of us adore.
Wes Craven’s Scream has become one of the most notable horror films, and its 90s
fashion undoubtedly made the film even more iconic. Drew Barrymore’s opening scene cameo
as Casey Becker has served as timeless fall fashion inspiration nearly three decades after its
release. Barrymore is seen wearing a cream rib-knit J.Crew sweater and light wash jeans paired with a dark red lip conveying a style that is simple, relatable, and classic.
The Love Witch might have been released in 2016, but this comedy horror film looks like
it’s straight out of the 60s. Director Anna Biller was meticulous in selecting protagonist Elaine’s
wardrobe, ensuring that every piece was vintage and authentic to the 60s. Feminine glam
combined with a witchy flair created an iconic character that so many of us love. One of my
personal favorite looks is during the tea room scene where Elaine is seen wearing a vintage
Victorian Gunne Sax dress paired with a light pink floppy hat. This romantic look felt genuine to
Elaine’s self-fantasies which further emphasized her complex character.
Another cult classic for the Halloween season, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975),
features numerous unforgettable looks that have had an abiding influence on modern fashion.
Themes of camp and embracing sexual identity are reinforced by striking, gaudy outfits. The
androgynous mad scientist Dr. Frank-n-Furter has several amazing costumes; his most notable
being a black sequined corset, black glitter gloves, fishnet garters, pearl jewelry, and high heels.
Another remarkable costume is Columbia’s look during the “Time Warp” number, which features
a sequin corset paired with a gold sequined jacket and top hat. These glittery, alluring looks in
The Rocky Horror Picture Show have become the heart of glam rock.
The Addams Family, which has become deep-rooted in pop culture, exhibits gothic
glamor in its finest form. The Addams Family was originally a cartoon created in 1938, but
despite this fictional family being re-made into movies and television series, the aesthetics of the
family still remain genuine to the original illustrations. The glamorous mother of the family,
Morticia Addams, is known for her black tight-fitting trumpet gown complimented with long
deep-red nails. Wednesday Addams, the cynical daughter in the family, has a prominent
costume consisting of a black long-sleeve dress with a white Peter Pan collar, enhanced with
her iconic jet-black pigtails.
Jenna Ortega’s portrayal of Wednesday Addams in the Netflix series
Wednesday by Tim Burton has enhanced the original Wednesday look by offering a modern
gothic look. Her first look in the series pays homage to the classic 1991 Wednesday look, but as the series continues and we get to learn more about Wednesday’s character, we also get to see more of her fashion sense evolve. Wednesday is often seen wearing her black-and-white Nevermore Academy uniform, which arguably enhanced the dark academia trend aesthetic following the series release in 2022. She’s also seen wearing casual clothing such as platform Doc Marten boots, black and white sweaters, a black varsity jacket, and several black leather
satchels. Every one of Wednesday’s looks in the series channel the gothic glamor that is
relevant in fashion right now.
So many of the Halloween films we all know and love have influenced fashion, and
become a muse for fashion designers over the past decades. Horror films have created some of
the most iconic characters in history with equally as iconic fashion connected to them.
