Super Bowl Halftime Rewind

The Super Bowl Halftime show has always doubled as a runway. With millions of people watching the performances, they are also watching to see what the artists are wearing. For those of us that aren’t particularly passionate about the catching and throwing aspect of football, we get to enjoy the sights and sounds of the halftime show. Over the years we have witnessed some stunning looks and incredible performances. Let’s take a look back at the halftime fashion over the years and see what’s to come for future shows.

One of the most unforgettable pregnancy reveals was done in a custom Loewe jumpsuit, an Alaia oversized puffer, and a JW Anderson bra plate. Rihanna’s 2023 halftime show look was a striking monochromatic red look that kept your eyes on her throughout the entire performance. She wore a pair of Maison Marginal x Salomon sneakers and matching gloves for the show in Glendale, Arizona. All of her backup dancers wore all-white puffer jackets and black sunglasses. I think we all loved hearing some of Rihanna’s most iconic songs while taking in that bold red look.

Another legendary performance and look took place in Indianapolis, Indiana, during Madonna’s 2012 halftime show. The black and gold god-like look was designed by Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy. She wore gold leather boots, black gloves, a black dress and an extravagant gold headpiece. This performance not only gave us some of Madonna’s classic hits but also an equally dazzling outfit.

Two early 2000s stars performed in trendy looks just within two years of each other. Gwen Stefani and No Doubt performed in 2003 in San Diego, California, with Stefani wearing low-rise pants, Adidas ski boots, a sliver top and a studded belt—all with accents of red.

Britney Spears performed in 2001 in Tampa, Florida, alongside headliners Aerosmith and NSYNC. Britney wore a pair of low-rise metallic Nike pants, black platform boots, and a cropped Aerosmith tee.

A vibrant look that many of us weren’t around to see live, came from Diana Ross in 1996. Ross performed in Tempe, Arizona, starting in a red minidress and making multiple outfit changes, each one more stunning than the last. She then changed into a strapless orange and purple gown, which is my personal favorite. Another memorable look featured a long golden cape over a bright purple jumpsuit.

All of these looks are so true to the artists and add to the already impressive performances we see each year. Every performer has the ability to make a statement with their look, and I think these artists did just that. These are some of my personal favorites—what’s your favorite halftime show look?
