Happy October! If you’re anything like me, you’ve been thinking about Halloween and the stress of choosing a costume since August. Halloween falls on Thursday this year, which means those of us wanting to make the most of the weekend will have to rack our brains for four entire costumes. If you want a forecast of what’s trending this year, I’ve got you covered.
Music Culture Icons
Dressing up as music artists is nothing new, but this year seems to be a new high for theming. Pinterest reports searches for ‘Charli XCX makeup looks’ increased by 2345% in October, by far the highest among individual costumes. Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan also top the list as remnants of this Summer’s playlist. Interestingly, Kesha trails these three, representing, in my opinion, the resurgence of an early 2010s nostalgia among Gen Z. A personal favorite is Jojo Siwa, whose 2024 rebrand makes for an eye-catching (and hilarious) costume.
Movies
Movies are always one of the most popular sources of costumes, with this year being no exception. Movie characters are easily recognizable, and relatively easy to put together a costume for, making this genre great for those of us who ball on a budget.
Inside Out 2 and the emotions from it are very popular this year, especially with group costumes. They stand out in a crowd, and are good last-minute costumes, with only basic clothing and temporary hair dye necessary.
Halloween classic Beetlejuice received a long-anticipated sequel this past September after 36 years, and with it has come a surge of Google searches for costume inspo from the film.
Joker and Harley Quinn. I get it- a new movie came out, sure. But this costume has been extremely popular since Suicide Squad released in 2016. Try something new, mix it up a bit! With that said, this is a great reason to dye your hair, which I’ll always find an excuse to do, so this gets the pass.
Current Pop Culture
We’ve already reached the Holiday season of 2024 if you can believe it. I like to look at Halloween costumes as a way to recap the past year of pop culture, it can be a fun way to look back. This year marked the first ‘normal’ Summer Olympiad since 2016, a wildly popular event that had most of America tuned in. With this has come costumes like Simone Biles, and yes, divisive breakdancer Raygun. Recent social media star Moo Deng is another trending look, though she’ll never know it. For couples in need of ideas, Bridgerton costumes are trending with the recent release of a new season.
Anything and Everything Vintage
This is a pretty broad topic, so it’s hard to narrow down exactly what a “Vintage Halloween costume” actually entails. Think costumes reminiscent of a 60s horror flick, campy monsters and all. Classic Dracula, clowns, bats, aliens, things people considered spooky in the 60s. I think this is especially fun if the entire party is themed around a vintage look, make some Halloween-y baked goods along with it too!
Of course, don’t take what’s trending as a hard guideline. Part of the fun of Halloween is expressing your own creativity and making the most out of what you have in your closet. So branch out, and explore a bit!
